I hate posts like this… it effects all of us online. When someone asks for help, I don’t want my first thought to be “is this for real?” or “is this a scam?”, but unfortunately that’s the way it’s heading.
Janel Ochoa is not the first internet scammer, nor will she be the last (unfortunately), but at least she is one less that the Wahm community has to deal with.
Here’s a blurb from the Nevada Appeal article:
Janel Ochoa, who, according to authorities, used various online names, including Yvette Romero and Christy Flores, was booked into the Carson City Jail on suspicion of felony theft by material misrepresentation….
…“I don’t know who found out. I think they called the funeral home or something, wanting to see what they could do. But then there was no record of any of this. A couple of people started putting two and two together,” Jurkovic said. “We all work hard for our money. Then (she) lied to us. She said she had cancer, then she was pregnant, then she decided she was going to die. I thought I was doing a good deed for someone who was dying.”
This woman obviously intended to do wrong, as she even spent several hours on the phone with one of her victims, which is very sad.
We are a caring community, that much is for sure. I’m curious how others deal with those asking for help through our wahm communities. Have you provided financial aid in the past, and will you continue to do so in the future? Or perhaps you might assist in other ways, such as a clothing donation. Please share your thoughts!

This makes me really sad. I’ve seen a couple posts in my day that were a bit too forthcoming asking for financial help.
If you look at what the blog community has done for Stephanie Nielson and her family, you know that we are capable of big things. It is a shame that people would take advantage of that, especially in a time when SO many people are feeling the crunch and stress of tight budgets.
You think she’ll start a blog about her time in jail? ;)

Stories like this are really disheartening.
It’s a real shame when someone takes advantage of the good nature of others.
There’s a Garth Brooks’ song that says: “…I hear them saying youll never change things and no matter what you do its still the same thing. But its not the world that I am changing I do this so this
World will know that it will not change me.”
Let’s be careful but not care less. Let’s not let the scammers discourage us from wanting to continue to help others.
That’s really sad that someone had to resort to lying and scamming other people. If people would just look within themselves they can find an honest business just waiting to come out. It just takes a lot of honest thought. Why resort to hurting others?
