A few weeks ago, my Father-In-Law was here for a visit.  I used to work in the cellular industry so he always shows me his new toys and asks me if I can figure things out for him .. however the question he had for me that day made me shake my head for a minute or two!

It seemed that every time a caller left a voice mail message, my FIL would receive it as a text message instead – word for word of the voice message was converted to text.  Some people (including me) may find that very cool, however my FIL didn’t as he’s not into text messaging people at all, and he also brought up a very valid concern about trying to read the text message and reply to it while driving.  After playing around and leaving a voice mail message on his phone, I was rather floored to hear the notification ring on his phone and see my exact voice message had indeed been converted to text.  There were instructions on how to listen to the original voice message if the user chose to do so.

At the very bottom of the text message was a line that pointed to the culprit of this curious feature .. SpinVox, so off I went to Google to check them out.

SpinVox Voice to Text

SpinVox Voice to Text

For someone like me who hates voice mail, SpinVox sounds absolutely perfect!  A caller leaves a voice message and I receive a text message of that call that also allows me to call in and listen to the message if I think there may be a problem with it.

Let me mention now that though my FIL didn’t sign up for the SpinVox service, his company (who provides their employee’s with cellular phones) did sign up in order to provide their employee’s with the SpinVox service .. apparently my Father-In-Law didn’t get the memo lol.

SpinVox to Blog Post:

I’ve just signed up for a trial of the SpinVox Blog service which will allow me to phone in a blog post.  I’ll speak and SpinVox will convert my speech to a text post that will be automatically posted to my blog .. talk about very cool if it works (and judging from some other reviews I’ve read, I believe it works).  When I signed up for the service, I received the message that I would be contacted within 48 hours with full setup instructions, so I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes in a future post.

SpinVox to Social Networks:

Currently, Social Networks through SpinVox is only compatible with Jaiku, Twitter and Facebook.  I’m not entirely sure how beneficial this service is, considering the mobile apps available for at least Twitter and Facebook .. but I suppose that many people do find it easier to speek a message than type a message on their cell phone keypads.  Still, it’s an interesting concept :)

SpinVox to Email:

If you’re like me and can never find a pen and paper when you need them, the SpinVox Memo service may be just what you need – speak your message or reminder to yourself and SpinVox will convert your memo to an email and send it to your inbox.  I can think of a dozen times recently when I could have used this lol.
