That’s right, I’m going to be a Mommy again .. to a 13 week old black lab puppy :) This whole situation is sad really. A Facebook friend posted about this poor puppy who was in desperate need of a loving home. The shelter was apparently one of those that only holds dogs for so long, and then has them put down if they’re not adopted .. and this poor little baby had run out of time.
It probably isn’t the best time for us to get a new puppy, but then there was no way I could see an innocent baby put down without just cause (and come on, at 12 weeks old at the time, what cause can be “just”?). So I told my friend that I’d take her .. didn’t exactly discuss it with my husband first, but given that he’s a dog lover (lol), I knew it wouldn’t take much to suck him in.
So on this coming Saturday, my new baby girl will be making the trek from Montreal to Toronto, where I’ll pick her up and take her on the final 2.5 hour stretch to her forever home.
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this.. yes I understand that animal shelters are overwhelmed and that euthanasia rates are extremely high … but a PUPPY?? I just plain and simply don’t get it. Doing some research told me that the Toronto Humane Society doesn’t euthanize due to lack of space or age.. apparently I was mistaken when I assumed that all shelters ran that way. This poor girl was being housed by the OSPCA (Ontario Society For The Protection of Cruelty To Animals) and when I checked out their website, I discovered one buried gem:
Sadly, in some cases animals may be euthanized due to shelter overcrowding.
That explains a lot :( So I’m extremely grateful to my Facebook friend for posting about this little girl on his profile, as a favour to another friend who’s business is animal rescue.
My husband has already warned me not to make this a habit lol .. but at least I saved one precious puppy :))
Now the name game has begun.. my daughter’s vote is for Roxy, but here’s a list of names that some Facebook friends have suggested:
- Twilight
- Midnight
- Shadow
- Lola
- Shyla
- Precious
- Jewel
So now I’m turning to you for help .. what do you suggest for a name for her?

What a nice thing to do. I like the name Shadow. After all she knows you have saved her and she will be your shadow. Just saying.
Have a terrific day. :)
Thanks :) That’s terrific reasoning for her name! I suspect we’ll end up picking the winner out of a hat LOL!
Oh, how sad that they have to put animals down!! But wonderful that you are taking her! I say Lola.
I’m amazed they were going to put down such a cute puppy too. You’d think it wouldn’t be hard to find her a home.

We couldn’t believe they’d put a 12 week old puppy down either Alice :(
I totally agree Emm :( Wish I could take them all in..
Congratulations on the new baby!! :) It horrifies me too how many pets are being put down here too :(
Chalk me up as another vote for Shadow :)

What a beautiful puppy! My hubby wants a black lab, I was leaning to a Golden, but that face may help his case!
Our black baby’s name is Mia. Mia Bella Dolce to be exact. She is now 5, but we love her so. And a big black baby she is! And though she is “needy” she’s the best dog I’ve ever had.
Thank you Vicki! Another big dog is not what I had in mind LOL .. I was thinking a little short haired terrier, but that face – yep, I’m a sucker :)
We have a big white baby! Buster the Husky/Shepherd who is 4 now. So in our little house we’ll have 2 big dogs plus 4 of us .. eeek! LOL
Thanks for the comment and the vote Storm :) I’m still shocked to realize that they’re putting so many innocent animals down!
Thank you for rescuing her…she’s so pretty :)
Although it doesn’t match her color, I think ‘Gem’ is a good name for her.
And congratulations for the new puppy. :)

I’ve been working with some rescue groups here in Connecticut, and I am so glad that you have adopted from a shelter.
I hope more people do the same.
